Deathline Day 1

This is my study for Day 1 of my Deathline Challenge.  I've never (ever) painted an environment.  I do have a distant mountain side city environment in the piece I'm working on, so that was the main point of this study.  I stopped at a little over 2 hours because I didn't want to get that far into this.

Recent Studies

These studies were done for my Bloodsports 4 entry.  Only the bottom one (Undertaker) was really relevant since I did not do my initial design concept which was my character crawling toward us which would show a close up of his leather jacket.

The hand study was essentially the first true study I've ever done in digital paint.  Each of these took much longer than I would have liked.

Recent Sketches - January '12

These are sketches from the beginning of the year and up to about January 20.  Pretty much just random stuff.  The more rendered drawings at the bottom were from magazine reference.  The last sketch was a concept for my Bloodsports 4 entry.

Bloodsports 4: Legend of Lizards

My lofty concept blew up in my face on this, but I'm pretty happy with my character design - which is about all this is really.

This was my first official participation with the Crimson Daggers.  The next one is already under way and I'm pretty much on track with the production schedule I made for myself.  My first studies will be for my redesign of the Princess Mononoke movie poster/cover.

Crystal Crusaders

Here’s the MP3 I did for Crimson Daggers “Crystal Crusaders” theme song for Bloodsports 4.

Lyrics:
An evil force is looming near
Crystal Crusaders have no fear
With crystal critters by their side
Standing up to Anthracite
With the galaxy on the line
Crystal Crusaders
Fighting hard and shining bright
Crystal Crusaders
Stop the evil Anthracite
Crystal Crusaders
Born to destroy
And swallow worlds
Peatman armies made of coal
But light from these crystal hearts
Will turn these lumps of coal to gold
With the galaxy on the line
Crystal Crusaders
Fighting hard and shining bright
Crystal Crusaders
Stop the evil Anthracite
Crystal Crusaders
Crystal Crusaders of the heart
Crystal Crusaders

New Year, New Blog, New Beginnings

This is my new blog, dedicated to my growth as an artist, specifically as a freelance illustrator.

I have worked in art and design full time in varying fields and industries since 2005.  My resume includes graphic design work for a web design company, an advertising design company, lead designer for an independent urban sportswear/outerwear company, and since late 2010, freelance illustration and design for a variety of clients ranging from independent clothing lines to album art.

For 2012, I have made it a personal and professional goal to achieve my dream of becoming a self-reliant, full time freelance illustrator.  This means a shift of focus back to my roots: drawing and illustrating the things I love.

I didn't plan on making this a big long bio, so I'll keep it short so I can get to my studies.

I am beginning my Crimson Daggers Deathline Challenge here and now.

Here are my goals for 2012, as stated to the Crimson Daggers:

1. Develop a new professional portfolio, shifting my freelance focus from illustration and design for the music industy, to entertainment/fantasy illustration.
As a part of this:
a) Increase study time to a minimum of 2 hours a day – EVERY day – no excuses
b) Participate in every Bloodsport challenge
c) Create 1-2 personal pieces for a new, dedicated portfolio per month

2. Become financially stable and viable solely off of my work as a freelance artist.

3. Become more organized, efficient, and focused
a) Use schedule book effectively
b) Set goals for each month, week and day
